On May 21, 1921 Nobel Peace Prize laureate Andrei Sakharov was born. While being one of the most important nuclear physicist of his era, he became an outspoken proponent of non-proliferation of nuclear arms, and the most prominent human rights defender in his country. His role in détente and the development of freedom of speech and self-determination in the Soviet bloc is undisputed.
In celebration of his life the month of May will be dedicated to several events in his honor.
