Franklin van der Pols, historian and sociologist, specialized in the public understanding of science and technology and in the public understanding of nation building and conflict. He was Director of the Dutch National Foundation for the Public Understanding of Science and Technology and worked for the University of Utrecht, Groningen University and Erasmus University Rotterdam. He then chose to follow his deep interest in museums as instruments of public engagement and understanding of national building and democracy, served as head of exhibitions at the Netherlands Royal Army Museum and developed the conceptual frame for the National Military Museum. He is chief-editor of Museumpeil, journal for museum professionals, and works as a strategic advisor to museums in Europe.
The Andrei Sakharov Research Centre contributes to the development of a pluralist and democratic society in Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union.
