Roy Allison is Professor of Russian and Eurasian International Relations at the School
of Global and Area Studies, University of Oxford. He directs the Centre for Russian
and Eurasian Studies at St. Antony’s College. Former positions include Reader in
International Relations, London School of Economics (2005-11) and Head of the
Russia and Eurasia Programme, Chatham House (1993-2005). He has written or co-
authored five books, including Russia, the West and Military Intervention (Oxford
University Press, 2013), and edited or co-edited a further five books. His recent
articles address Russian interventions in Ukraine (2014) and Syria (2015), Russian
approaches to international order and law, Russia in regional organisations and
Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine. They have appeared in International Affairs,
Europe-Asia Studies, The Chinese Journal of International Politics and Problems of
